Historia
Artistic imagery that is politically edgy is something many people who lived through The Troubles, wish to turn away from in an attempt to ignore the past. Phillip’s art takes a uneasy image and turns it into a design of beauty. Her textile featured here is pleasing to the eye but lets the viewer subtly discover an evocative underlying image. Phillips does not use art for political commentary but she does hope her artwork will transform the dark heavy energy of the past into a lighter and positive future.

This particular piece is an expression of she childhood when Phillips was living unnecessary tension that she tried to ignore, not be a part of, yet it surrounded her and powerfully affected her life and future creative inspirations. Using delicate yet strong linen bedding to print and laser engrave a design, Jill juxtaposed antique linen cloth, the labor of Irish working-woman against the bold imagery of huge wall mural paintings of twenty-first century Belfast.
